BF-EXTRA! First American Full-Time Professional Writer – Edgar Allan Poe
Alright – this one is contested, but a number of sources maintain that Boston native Edgar Allan Poe was the first American to try to make a living solely by creative writing. Some will argue that this title should belong to contemporary James Fennimore Cooper, but he was heir to a fortune by age 20 and also seems to have drawn an income from his service in the Navy. Before him, Charles Brockden Brown can claim to be the first professional writer, but he was at least partly a journalist. Washington Irving has a claim, too, but – oh, let’s just say he was ONE of the first and have an end to it.
The main reason to turn our attention to Poe today is that it’s Halloween, and he is one of the authors most associated with the holiday. Even more topically, the Boston native was just honored with a statue up the street from our offices earlier this month (October 2014).
It is a gorgeous work, entitled Poe Returning to Boston, by sculptor Stefanie Rocknak. The statue is located at what is now called Poe Square (http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/edgar-allan-poe-square) at the intersection of Boylston & Charles Streets and features the famous author walking away from Boston Common and towards his old home at the long gone Carver Street, suitcase overflowing with his ideas. “Papers” containing some of his works trail behind him, including his most famous “The Tell-Tale Heart”, written in Boston.
Despite being born here and getting his start, Poe had a contentious relationship with the city and the literary establishment.
Happy Halloween from your friends at First Realty Management!
