BF#09 First Night
Because we do want to highlight and promote this wonderful Boston First, the celebration on December 31st that was known for the first time in Boston as First Night.
Created as an artists event, an alternative to the drunken revelry of many New Year’s Eve gatherings, the inaugural First Night was December 31, 1975. Started as a small event located on Boston Common, over the past few decades the event has spread throughout the city, incorporating arts and cultural events at a number of locations, topped off with 2 fireworks displays. This family friendly event showcases ice sculptures, theatrical & musical performances, a poetry slam, films, puppets, stunts, animation and a parade.
According to the City of Boston, “First Night attracts crowds greater than 1,000,000, and generates an estimated $47 million in revenue in the City of Boston. The concept that originated in Boston 38 years ago has served as a model for more than 200 similar celebrations worldwide.” (Press release: City of Boston)
