Our 14th Annual Academic Olympiad was held on Saturday, November 17th, 2012 at the Harvard HGSE Gutman Conference Center in Cambridge, MA.
It was a fun-filled day with lots of smiles, enthusiasm, and teamwork!
Congratulations to all of the participants and thank you to all of the volunteers!
“Too often the kids with prowess in sports tend to be the only neighborhood heroes. This academic competition gives us a chance to encourage kids to develop leadership skills and self-confidence by striving to improve their mental, not just physical abilities. Best of all, this can help reinforce a cultural belief that knowledge and teamwork are positive values that deserve peer recognition.” – Bill Kargman, President, First Realty
The First Realty Academic Olympiad builds on twenty years of success in organizing annual athletic competition for the children and teens who live in the rental communities managed by First Realty Management.
The Academic Olympiad comprises a variety of age appropriate challenges, from brainteasers and general knowledge questions to unique mental athletics requiring engineering, construction and other skills in the physical sciences. For example, in the “Don’t Sink the Bears” event, contestants build aluminum foil boats to certain specifications and determine how many tiny toy bears can be loaded before capacity is exceeded. In another game, youth race the clock to build large geometric shapes using only newsprint and two tools.
This event also encourages collaborative effort within the company and with the larger community. Harvard University provides the space, and employees from throughout First Realty volunteer to conduct and judge the competitions or chaperone site teams. Local college students who volunteer at the after school programs held at most First Realty Management apartment communities also help coach and prepare the teams in advance of the event.
